Student of the year Marcel Chalou, who graduated with an associate's degree in Water Treatment Technology, discusses what helped him succeed in college after many years away of school.
Student of the Year Address
Let us recall that not so long ago, our plans led us to NM, and now, we have arrived here at graduation. Some of us were non-traditional students working multiple jobs while raising our children, who decided to make the life changing decision to reinvent our future through higher education. Others of us were young adults, immediately taking charge after high school, and seizing this opportunity. We, no matter where we started from, have all now earned experience, skills, and a credential that will forever help us make a difference and succeed. Whatever tomorrow has in store for us, remember what we learned from our classmates and instructors that we respected and admired at Northern Maine Community College. Their actions spoke louder than words. Their positive can do attitudes, with the ability to adapt to change, their compassion, their respect for others, and their unwavering commitment to doing things the right way, every time. We often saw instructors, working weekends, answering questions at all hours of the night, and preparing for each period of instruction with the same level of devotion that a parent cares for their child. Helping us to succeed was more of a lifestyle than a job. As we begin our new careers, we have the opportunity to take with us not only what we learned in the books and the labs, but also to incorporate the qualities of those we admired, and to make those qualities a part of ourselves. We, the graduates, will raise the bar in each of our professions, because that is what we learned by being a part of this community, our community. We will commit ourselves to excellence, not only because it is the right thing to do, but because this is who we are. We are the 2020 graduates of Northern Maine Community College. Thank you.
